Sometimes you want big, voluminous hair, but other times you’d prefer a more defined look. There are multiple ways to prevent frizz at various points of the wash day process. We’ve rounded up these tips and tricks for when you’re hoping to get frizz-free curls.

Ditch the Towel

Traditional terry cloth towels can cause unnecessary friction on the hair, leading to frizzy tresses. Instead, try a microfiber towel, or even grab an old t-shirt to gently scrunch excess water from your hair after washing. Avoid rubbing which will upset the natural clumping of your curls

Detangle Carefully

We’ve already got a whole article on how to detangle your hair properly as it’s a major factor in maintaining hair length, but taking extra care while detangling is especially important to keep your curls frizz-free. For most, this means detangling hair while wet with any hair product that provides slip and allows your comb to glide through your curls.

Apply Products with Care

Similar to detangling, you’re going to want to always apply products to your curls with care, however, when going for a really defined look, taking that extra time truly makes a difference. You may even want to try methods such as shingling, in which you apply product to a small section of hair and smooth it down individual curls for the most definition.

Keep Hair Moisturized

A major culprit of frizzy hair is dryness. Keeping your hair moisturized with your favorite products ensures that curls stay together and remain defined. Check out our article on the L.O.C. method to ensure that moisture stays locked in!

Protect Your Hair at Night

We’ve mentioned it a few times in the past - your hair is only as healthy as your nighttime maintenance! Tying hair up with a satin scarf or bonnet allows curls to maintain moisture and avoid frizz. A satin pillowcase will do the job as well. On top of that, you may not want to leave your hair loose - try gathering your curls at the top of your head with a seamless elastic, also known as the pineapple, or lightly twisting your hair in small sections. This will be especially helpful if you’re someone who tosses and turns in their sleep.

It's that simple! Combined, these tips will ensure a head of beautifully defined curls, no matter the texture.
