So you’ve taken the plunge and dyed your natural hair. Whether you went from dark brown to light or you’ve got candy-colored tresses, the fact remains that color-treated hair needs a bit more care than unprocessed curls. No matter how careful you are, the act of dying will alter your hair’s structure, leaving behind fragile curls that need a little more TLC. We at KAZMALEJE are here to ensure your color remains vibrant and your hair stays healthy with these simple tips and tricks.

The number one way to take care of your dyed hair is to change the way you approach your wash days. This can be done in multiple ways!

1. Use shampoo and conditioner formulated for color-treated hair.

There are already products on the market specifically made to cater to dyed hair. Purple shampoos and conditioners work great to keep brassiness away from blonde hair. Others are formulated to ensure that you are not stripping added color away from your curls. Depending on your color choice, there are an array of products out there to ensure your hair stays healthy and vivid.

2. Keep it cool

When you wash your hair in warm or hot water, it’s more likely to remove the dye. Wash your color-treated curls in lukewarm to cool water to lengthen the amount of time your color will last. This isn’t just your hair being temperamental - there’s science behind this. Warm water opens the hair’s cuticles, releasing the color you worked hard to deposit. Cool water seals the cuticles, ensuring that minimal color is lost.

3. Deep condition regularly

While this should already be a staple in your hair care regimen, a reminder can’t hurt! Make sure that you are deep conditioning your hair several times a month, giving your tresses much-needed moisture and nutrients. If your hair was lightened and then dyed using a semi-permanent color or rinse, feel free to add a bit of the dye into your conditioning routine to maintain vibrancy.

Once you’ve got wash day taken care of, your day-to-day hair maintenance habits can ensure a long-lasting color as well!

1. Moisturize, moisturize, moisturize!

Dryness is a common side effect of dying your hair, so taking the time to moisturize daily is an absolute must. Spritz with water, aloe vera juice, your favorite leave-in conditioner, or all three! We’ve covered how moisturizing helps you retain length and protects hair in the winter, so protecting dyed hair makes it a triple threat!

2. Seal in that moisture

Just like we’ve talked about in previous articles, taking the time to seal in added moisture with a layer of oil ensures that nutrients stay in and the color stays too.

3. Don’t be afraid to trim

While it may seem counterproductive to cut your hair when your aim is to have it grow, the reality is that single strand knots and split ends won’t go away on their own and can only cause further damage. Regularly trimming hair ensures ends stay healthy and there’s no snagging or tearing during detangling. This also ensures that any excess damage is removed from dyed hair.

And that’s it! Seven simple tips and tricks to maintain a vibrant color and breathe life into dyed locks!
